Introduction
Creating a blog is a fun and creative process. When the blog project was first assigned the prospects of creating a blog from scratch is a daunting task. But with working in a group over the course of the semester the task turned into a fun and creative way to display information on MIS. The following report will cover the layout design of the blog, the developmental process, the content, and the blog feedback report.
Layout Creation
When first assigned this project at the beginning of the semester the first step was to find the best format to host the blog. After playing around with a few providers (WordPress, tumbler, Weebly) the group came to a consciences and chose Weebly. The primary reason we picked Weebly was its versatility and the fact the service has a variety of free options to select from. The blogs layout was an interesting choice for us, we wanted to create more than just a blog and with Weebly you can create multiple pages using a sub-domain. On our blog there are multiple pages visitors can select from. It was apparent after talking too many of our outside commenters that many were not aware of what MIS was, so we decided to create video page on the blog that offers videos about what MIS is and why it is important. A few other pages we created was the contact page which we felt was important for those wishing to contact the content creators. Another page was the discussion board which has not been used by any of our visitors but we wanted to generate a discussion about MIS. On the about page is a fun and interactive poll
Developmental Process
After Weebly was selected as the provider for the blog the theme/layout of the blog was selected. Then as a group the decision to post blog posts as they came in was made. Not many changes were made to the blog after its initial creation as far as the design goes. The only major change came in the form of font changes and the change of the main cover photo for the home screen. It was changed because a few commenters noticed the welcome page was hard to read due to poor color choice.
Content Selection
The blog posts were selected due to their relevancy to the topic of MIS or closely related to MIS. Every member of the group contributed to creating posts and posting on the site. Most of the posts are assignments that were written for the MIS course a few were selected from other courses for example the ethics app essay. But those posts were about topics closely related to MIS and the information industry. Over the course of the semester 11 posts total have been posted on the blog.
Blog Feedback
Our comments on the blog where by numerous business professionals as well as family and friends. We wanted to have vast and diverse population for our commenters so that is why family, friends, and professionals were selected and targeted. We contacted the commenters by posting on Facebook and asking them directly. Some of the feedback was earlier in the process so their feedback was taken into considerations and some changes were made based on their feedback.
The below is a compiled list of all of our commenters. The initials next to each comment indicate who is responsible for the commenter.
1. Ikram Beylayneh - Nice article! I had a chance to learn more about this company. SA
2. Trang Nguyen - Impressive article! Very nice in explaining Tesco strategies. PD
3. Lam - What a nice article! I glad they develop this app. PD
4. Khang Doan - Wow! I didn't know that they created this app. nice article by the way. PD
5. Hanh Hoang - Nice article! I can see that the future depends on those that you listed. PD
6. Marilyn Simon- Blog looks good, some visible typos though. Could use a proofread but overall good. TR
7. Steve Doben- Banner is too busy, maybe try a different text alignment as well. TR
8. Dave Prior- Interesting articles. Well written. Articulate. In reference to the Tesco article I think the reader would need a reference point regarding the 50 cent drop in equity price in 2014 (i.e.: what percentage of its share price does this drop represent?). I also might suggest editing the articles as a whole. Overall nice job. TR
9. Jose Costa-It looks great, good job. TR
10. Claudia Marques- Very informative! Great job and I learned something. TR
11. Brandon Murphy- Good read, good job. TR
12. Evan Cook- the system offered by DTS should be used campus wide. If it protects your online assets, it only makes sense to make everyone use it. At Bryant, as far as I’m aware, the only thing we're supposed to follow to help ourselves online is change out Bryant.edu passwords every 180 days and not use internet explorer. TR
13. Dan Bailey- as a Wentworth student it is very nice to see the ISO taking control. They are a very good resource and I feel that every student should know their suggestions and guidelines. TR
14. John Mangini-commented on how both Web 2.0 sites posts are very interesting and informative. RM
15. Jane Mangini-commented on the drink the safe away post saying how creative the post is linking it to MIS RM
16. Zach John commented on the Tesco vs Walmart paper saying how relatable the topic is to our own lives RM
17. Alex Logiudice-commented on the fresh direct post saying how well written it is as well as how he now wishes to use fresh direct RM
18. Nick Geary -commented on the future trends post saying how he agreed with the points made, especially the points made on the cloud RM
Conclusion
The blogs traffic has been quite substantial for the semester. The site has experienced over 500 site views since the beginning of the semester. The number of visitor’s is highly pleasing as well as numerous comments on our individual posts and participants in the poll we have on the site. The blog has been quite a success and it is something we are certainly proud of as a group. This blog was good practice for possibly creating and maintaining a blog in the near future.
